Racist chants overshadow Spain–Egypt friendly at RCDE Stadium

The friendly match between Spain and Egypt (0-0) was marred by a heated controversy due to racist chants from a section of the crowd, specifically targeting Egyptian players based on their religion.

During the game at the RCDE Stadium in Cornellà, some fans repeatedly chanted «Muslim, if you don't jump,» while booing the Egyptian anthem before kickoff. These actions quickly sparked outrage and reignited the debate over racism in Spanish stadiums.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the match proceeded without interruption, even though the anti-racism protocol theoretically allows for the suspension of the game. Messages broadcast in the stadium called for respect, but were deemed too little, too late by several observers.

«Lamine left the stadium with his face downcast, accompanied by a security member. He is also Muslim, and we have insulted the one who is currently our footballing standard-bearer,» according to a Spanish media outlet.

The Spanish Football Federation condemned these actions, alongside several players and officials who denounced the «intolerant» acts as contrary to the values of sport. While authorities describe it as an isolated incident, this episode tarnishes the image of Spanish football as the 2030 World Cup approaches.
