The General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) said it is closely monitoring the public debate over daylight saving time, highlighting the «clear and tangible relief» experienced by citizens when Morocco returned to standard time during Ramadan.
In a statement, the party noted that despite eight years of implementation, the additional hour has yet to gain public acceptance and continues to generate widespread dissatisfaction.
The PJD argued that the measure negatively affects daily life, productivity, and schedules, particularly with regard to prayer times, school and university timetables, as well as administrative, commercial, and broader economic and social activities.
It also pointed to «significant psychological, biological, and social impacts», which, it said, have fueled growing calls to abolish the measure and revert to legal time, alongside the launch of a large-scale public petition.
The party’s General Secretariat stated that «in full responsibility and in the interest of the public good», it officially supports this demand and will «do everything in its power» to achieve it.
The statement also recalled the government’s earlier position, noting that its spokesperson had said following a government council in November 2021 that the issue of scrapping the additional hour, particularly contested during winter, was under discussion, a step that has yet to materialize.
Notably, the PJD-led government under Saadeddine Othmani was itself behind the October 2018 decision to permanently add 60 minutes to legal time, approved during an extraordinary cabinet meeting.
