«The Nexus Core Systems data center project is taking shape in Morocco», reported Africa Intelligence on Thursday. «The consortium behind the construction of a data center estimated at $1.2 billion has chosen the outskirts of Casablanca, specifically Nouaceur, as the project site», the same source added.
The choice of Morocco, particularly the Casablanca region, is driven by significant geostrategic advantages, including its proximity to Europe (just 15 km across the Strait of Gibraltar) and its direct connection to multiple undersea fiber optic cables, ensuring high-speed international connectivity.
In November, a delegation from the American tech giant Nvidia, a global leader in graphics processors essential for artificial intelligence, visited Morocco. The group met with key economic stakeholders, including Cires Technologies (a subsidiary of the Tanger Med group), Maroc Telecom, the Caisse de dépôt et de gestion (CDG), as well as officials from the Ministry of Digital Transition, which oversees the Morocco Digital 2030 strategy.
Morocco prepares the ground
The project is led by an international consortium comprising Nexus Core Systems, a specialist in AI infrastructure and project lead; Naver Cloud, a South Korean company responsible for platform operations; NVIDIA, which will supply next-generation processors, notably Blackwell GB200 GPUs; Lloyds Capital, an international investment firm; and TAQA Morocco, which will ensure the site’s energy supply exclusively from renewable sources.
The data center is designed to reach a total capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), powered entirely by green energy under a strategic agreement with TAQA Morocco. However, the project has experienced delays of several months. Initial plans, according to press reports, had scheduled the launch of the first phase, 40 MW, for the first quarter of 2026.
Meanwhile, Morocco has moved to anticipate the land requirements associated with such investments. At its meeting on March 2, the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council allocated 666 hectares in Nouaceur for major industrial projects, including the AI data center.
A few weeks earlier, the province of Nouaceur inaugurated a 476-hectare industrial acceleration zone in Ouled Saleh, dedicated to new technologies, further strengthening the area’s appeal for large-scale tech investments.
As a reminder, the South Korean group announced in June the creation of a consortium with Nvidia and Nexus Core Systems to build a next-generation AI data center in Morocco, with a planned total capacity of 500 MW.
