After several days of official silence, Algeria has finally broken its silence regarding the legal actions initiated in France by the anti-terrorism prosecutor over accusations of «State terrorism». The response, however, was rather subdued, emanating from the office of the Council of the Nation (the upper house), and almost slipped under the radar.
In a statement that addressed more than just this issue, the institution labeled the comments made by the French anti-terrorism prosecutor as «irresponsible and unacceptable,» even going so far as to call them «inappropriate.» It views these remarks as a «further deterioration» in the already tense relationship between the two countries, which has been marred by verbal clashes.
Typically, it is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that addresses French decisions and statements concerning Algeria. For example, the ministry, under the leadership of Ahmed Attaf, summoned the chargé d'affaires of the French embassy in Algiers on March 24, following the extension of the provisional detention of an Algerian diplomat accused in the kidnapping of the dissident Amir DZ, who is currently exiled in France.
Last week, the French anti-terrorism prosecutor announced the initiation of eight legal proceedings for «State terrorism» targeting Iran, Russia, and Algeria.
