The Spanish government's coordination and direction committee for the «Marhaba 2026» operation has unveiled an innovative plan integrating cutting-edge technologies, such as biometric analytics and real-time data processing. This initiative aims to mitigate risks and bolster the safety of travelers between June 15 and September 15 next year, as part of the annual crossing operation.
During a meeting led by the Assistant Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Interior, Susana Crisostomo, it was highlighted that the operation’s management is being revamped to align with the digital age. By leveraging real-time data on traffic flows, port activities, and weather conditions, the efficiency of this event, recognized as the largest seasonal movement within the European Union, is set to be significantly enhanced.
The plan also outlines a fleet strategy, detailing the number and capacity of ships required to ensure the seamless transit of travelers and vehicles. It includes specialized coordination plans for ports and comprehensive road safety programs.
The 2026 edition is projected to break previous records, with an anticipated 3 percent increase from 2025, which witnessed the movement of approximately 3.5 million travelers and over 800,000 vehicles.
