The Arabic news channel France 24 has aired a report from the Tindouf camps, focusing on the Sahara issue. The state-run outlet claims that «Sahrawi refugees still hold onto the hope of independence for the region, which has been a point of contention for 50 years between Morocco and the Polisario Front, with backing from Algeria».
To bolster this narrative, France 24 featured voices from the ground, including two housewives and a shopkeeper. Their statements unanimously reject Morocco's autonomy plan, initially proposed in 2007 and reaffirmed in February 2026.
The report also asserts that the Tindouf camps are home to approximately 163,000 «Sahrawi refugees». However, this figure warrants scrutiny, as the European Union and other aid providers estimate the population at around 90,000 for the purposes of humanitarian assistance.
It is noteworthy that on October 31, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2797, which endorses the autonomy solution put forward by Morocco.
