Moroccan parliament denounces irregularities in Pan-African Parliament election loss to Algerian candidate

The Moroccan Parliament has issued a strong response to losing the presidency of the Pan-African Parliament to an Algerian candidate, condemning the election for being «marred by serious irregularities».

In a statement, the Parliament highlighted that the meetings of the North African group, held on the sidelines of the session, were disrupted by breaches of protocol, notably the enforcement of a voting procedure «without legal basis» and external interference in their proceedings.

Rabat further warns of a «dangerous precedent», citing the use of private security personnel to influence discussions and manipulate decisions.

The statement claims multiple irregularities tainted the election process, including inconsistencies in the vote count, exceeding the regulatory time limits, and the adoption of decisions outside the established procedures. These issues, according to the Moroccan Parliament, cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election results.

The Moroccan delegation reports having reached out to the African Union Commission and its legal advisor, urging intervention to uphold the organization's regulations. It also announced its rejection of the election's outcome and its decision to boycott subsequent procedures.

This incident underscores the persistent tensions between Rabat and Algiers within African institutions, where political dynamics remain highly contentious.

As of now, there has been no official response from either the Algerian authorities or the African Union.
