Pressure from the Trump administration appears to have prompted Algeria to reassess its stance on the Sahara conflict, as suggested by recent remarks from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in an interview with local media.

«There is a UN resolution (Security Council Resolution 2797, editor’s note) that is progressing smoothly between us and them (the Moroccans, editor’s note),» he said when asked about the issue.

Algeria had abstained from voting on Resolution 2797 on October 31, despite holding a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council at the time. The resolution calls on Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario, and Mauritania to engage in negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration facilitated two rounds of talks between the four parties, held at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid and in Washington. A third round is expected in the coming weeks or months, ahead of the October deadline.

Notably, Tebboune’s comments were not relayed by Polisario media outlets, suggesting they may have caused some discomfort within the Front.

The Algerian president also avoided referencing the «right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people» or the option of «independence», positions traditionally upheld by the Polisario.
