On Wednesday, France denounced the Polisario Front's attack on the city of Smara, which took place on Monday, May 5, injuring a civilian. This condemnation follows a similar stance from the United States, voiced through its representative to the United Nations.
In a statement from its UN delegation, Paris declared that the attack «threatens regional stability» and «undermines the negotiation process» that was revitalized after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 in 2025. French authorities have urged the Polisario to respect the ceasefire and comply with UN resolutions concerning the Western Sahara conflict.
France's diplomatic corps reiterated its backing for UN efforts to find a political resolution to the conflict, viewing Morocco's autonomy plan as «the only basis» for achieving a «just, lasting, and mutually acceptable» solution.
Paris also called on MINURSO, in collaboration with Moroccan authorities, to «fully clarify» the circumstances surrounding this attack.
Moreover, France commended MINURSO for its efforts in what it termed a «challenging» regional environment. This latest Western condemnation comes as tensions have flared anew with the Polisario since the collapse of the ceasefire in November 2020.
