The Democratic Left Federation Party and the Unified Socialist Party have announced a strategic alliance ahead of the legislative elections slated for September 23.

During an extraordinary session yesterday, the national councils of both parties gave the green light to participate in the upcoming elections with unified lists.

According to Organic Law No. 29.11 on political parties, Article 1.55 permits «two or more political parties to form an alliance for elections involving communal councils, regional councils, and the House of Representatives. This alliance must be nationwide, and a political party cannot join more than one alliance for the same elections».

The law further clarifies that «an alliance of political parties may endorse lists that include candidates from all or some of its member parties, as necessary».

The two parties had previously considered presenting joint lists in the 2021 elections, but the Unified Socialist Party ultimately opted to run separately.

In a Facebook post, Jamal El Asri Secretary-General of the Unified Socialist Party, described the alliance as a preliminary move «in anticipation of further steps toward greater political battles».

He emphasized that this alliance represents «a crucial first step towards enhanced political coordination to fight corruption and tyranny, engage in the struggle for political reforms, and build the Morocco of tomorrow, a nation of freedom, dignity, democracy, and social justice».
