Three Moroccan farm workers died after a minivan plunged into a canal near Chioggia, south of Venice, on Saturday morning.
The victims, Abdelghani Gari, El Arbi Saifi, and Yassin Mazi, were among nine passengers traveling to agricultural fields to harvest radicchio when the vehicle crashed into the canal under circumstances that remain under investigation.
All three men were originally from the Khouribga region in Morocco. The repatriation of the bodies of the three Moroccan workers, including all related costs, has been covered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abriad (MRE).
The Venice prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation not only into the crash itself, but also into the labor and subcontracting system used to recruit agricultural workers. Italy’s labor inspectorate unit of the Carabinieri is leading that part of the inquiry.
