King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are slated to sign an agreement in the final quarter of 2026, officially launching the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline project.
This announcement came from Nigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in a statement following her phone conversation on Friday, May 8, with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. She noted that the agreement is a result of completing preliminary technical studies by the relevant authorities.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu also revealed that Morocco and Nigeria are planning to hold the second session of the bilateral Joint Commission in the coming months in Abuja. «This session aims to revive the bilateral agreements signed in June 2018 during former President Muhammadu Buhari's visit to Morocco,» she highlighted.
During the 32nd ordinary session of the African Union Executive Council in January 2018 in Addis Ababa, then-Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama and Nasser Bourita discussed reviving this high-level partnership framework between the two countries, which had been inactive for 26 years.
Bourita and Odumegwu-Ojukwu also emphasized the importance of reactivating the Nigeria-Morocco Business Council, a strategic platform to bolster bilateral and continental economic cooperation. They aim to leverage opportunities from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and a treaty to avoid double taxation between the two nations.
The Nigerian minister mentioned receiving an invitation from Nasser Bourita for a working visit to Morocco. «This visit should further solidify bilateral relations and advance the shared vision of a robust partnership between Nigeria and Morocco, serving Africa's development,» she stated.
