The session of the United Nations Committee of 24, held in Nicaragua from May 25 to 27, gave Algeria an opportunity to reassure the Sahrawis of the Polisario, who had been badly rattled by Ahmed Attaf’s remarks on the occasion of Africa Day.

In a speech, Algeria’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Toufik Koudri, denounced «false allegations», «celebrations of a fait accompli» and «biased readings» of the comments made by Ahmed Attaf on May 24. The diplomat also lashed out at «so-called recognitions in support of the Moroccan theses», APS reported.

The statements were welcomed by social media pages close to the Polisario. «While some media interpretations point to a possible shift in Algiers’ stance on Western Sahara, Algeria’s official position remains unchanged. Algeria continues to support the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and the decolonization framework recognized by the United Nations», a Sahrawi media outlet welcomed. An Arabic-language press outlet expressed the same satisfaction.

The tone contrasts with the anger displayed in recent days on social media by Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps, following the speech delivered on May 24 by Algeria’s foreign minister, Ahmed Attaf. Several posts criticized his support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, despite his call for «direct negotiations» between Morocco and the Polisario.

Adopted on October 31, the resolution, which enshrined the autonomy solution proposed by Morocco, serves as both the framework and the basis for the rounds of talks on the Sahara issue between Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario and Mauritania, held last February.

In his remarks carried by APS, Toufik Koudri carefully avoided any reference to Resolution 2797, another signal aimed at Polisario supporters. As a reminder, the Front had firmly condemned the adoption of this resolution.
