The Rabat Court of Appeal on Wednesday rejected a request for provisional release filed by the defense team of Mohamed Ziane, who is currently being held at El Arjat 1 prison, where he is serving prison sentences handed down in two separate cases.

On April 8, 2026, the Criminal Appeals Chamber of the Rabat Court of Appeal sentenced Ziane, a former human rights minister, to five years in prison in a case involving the alleged embezzlement and misappropriation of funds belonging to the Moroccan Liberal Party.

The ruling was issued while Ziane was already serving a separate three-year prison sentence imposed in 2022 following a complaint filed by the Ministry of Interior.

The prosecution in that case involved 11 charges, including insulting judges and public officials in the course of their duties, insulting public institutions, publishing statements intended to influence judicial proceedings before final rulings had been issued, and showing contempt for court decisions. He was also prosecuted for spreading false allegations and claims against a woman on the basis of her gender.
