Following the discovery of two drug-smuggling tunnels between Morocco and Ceuta as part of operations «Hades» and «Ares», investigations by Spain's National Police have uncovered plans for a third tunnel intended to transport large quantities of hashish into the enclave before forwarding the drugs to mainland Spain.
According to a report by the Drug and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) submitted to Spain's National Court, the same criminal network suspected of building the two earlier tunnels was also preparing a third passage in the border area. Investigators believe the aim was to ensure a continuous flow of drugs while consolidating the group's control over smuggling operations in exchange for a commission on every kilogram trafficked.
Recordings intercepted by investigators suggest the network planned to bring a person from Morocco into Ceuta irregularly to participate in the excavation work. Police also discovered metal reinforcement structures intended for the tunnel, highlighting what they described as the organization's significant financial and logistical resources.
The judicial investigation remains ongoing. Meanwhile, the tunnels discovered so far have been sealed and placed under close surveillance.
