Once the initial shock subsided, the Polisario leadership moved quickly to shape its own narrative around the death of Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz, who was killed on Sunday in an airstrike attributed to a drone operated by the Royal Armed Forces (FAR).

From his exile in France, Mahmoud Kenti has openly pointed the finger at Sahrawis who returned to the Tindouf camps following the securing of the El Guerguerat crossing on November 13, 2020, accusing them of playing a role in the death of the son of the Front’s former secretary-general.

In a social media post published on Tuesday, June 9, the former political prisoner, known for his criticism of Brahim Ghali’s leadership, claimed that Moroccan intelligence services had infiltrated the Polisario’s «Ministry of Defense». He further alleged that one Sahrawi had already come under scrutiny from the Front’s security services in March 2023 because of his alleged ties to Morocco.

This narrative appears aimed primarily at quelling the growing questions emerging both in Western Sahara and within the Tindouf camps over who stands to gain the most from the disappearance of Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz.

In September 2021, Mahmoud Kenti, also known as Zeidan, led a social media campaign calling for a military coup while Brahim Ghali was hospitalized in Algiers.
