A Moroccan student studying in China is in critical condition after a serious traffic accident left him in a coma, as his family struggles to cope with mounting medical expenses and the challenges of traveling to the Asian country.

Speaking to Bladi, the student's brother said the accident occurred on June 4 while 19-year-old Ibrahim Khalil Najmi was riding a motorcycle with a Saudi classmate. The two were involved in a serious crash.

Najmi, a second-year student at the University of Technology in Xi’an, suffered severe head injuries that caused internal bleeding and left him in a coma. He also sustained a lung contusion, multiple facial fractures and a serious leg fracture. His Saudi classmate suffered a fractured leg.

The family says it is facing significant financial difficulties as treatment costs continue to rise. According to his brother, relatives have been sending money to China daily while being unable to travel there to monitor his condition in person. A cousin who is also studying in China has been acting as a liaison with the hospital and keeping the family informed of Ibrahim’s condition.

«The hospital requested a large sum of money as a guarantee to continue treatment. My brother initially underwent facial surgery, and the university where he studies covered the costs», his brother said.

According to information obtained by Bladi, the Moroccan embassy in China is following the case closely and remains in contact with both the family and the hospital where Najmi is receiving treatment. The medical facility is located more than 700 kilometers from Beijing.

More than 15,000 Moroccan students are currently studying in China, spread across universities and institutes in various cities throughout the country.
