A 28-year-old Moroccan inmate was rescued after attempting suicide inside the infirmary wing of Turin’s Lorusso-Cutugno prison, according to the Italian Penitentiary Police Union (SAPPE).

Prison officers quickly intervened after spotting the inmate, cutting the noose from his neck using a T-shirt. Finding that he showed no vital signs, they immediately began CPR and continued resuscitation efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived with a defibrillator, ultimately saving his life.

SAPPE’s regional secretary for Piedmont, Vicente Santilli, praised the officers’ «professionalism, preparedness and humanity», saying they had prevented a tragedy through their swift response.

The union’s general secretary, Donato Capece, said the incident once again highlighted the crucial role played by prison officers in managing emergencies and safeguarding lives within Italy’s penitentiary system.
