2026 elections: Morocco allocates MAD 50 million to support young independent candidates
DR

Morocco’s state budget will help finance election campaigns for the legislative elections scheduled for September 23, 2026. In a decree published in the latest Official Gazette, the Ministry of the Interior allocated 350 million dirhams in public funding for political parties and 50 million dirhams for independent candidates under the age of 35 running without political affiliation (SAP).

The measure represents a significant new feature of the upcoming elections and was introduced by Aziz Akhannouch’s government in response to calls from the GenZ Morocco movement for greater political inclusion of young people.

The financial support is intended to encourage electoral competition, ease the financial burden of campaigning and promote equal opportunities among candidates.

The scheme will be overseen jointly by the ministries of the Interior, Justice, and Economy and Finance, each within its respective area of responsibility. The coordination is designed to ensure that public funds are distributed in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory framework.
