Two of the three teenagers who died after a drowning accident at Arrabassada beach in Tarragona, northeastern Spain, are set to be repatriated to Morocco, Moroccan Consul in Tarragona Ikram Chahine told local newspaper Diari de Tarragona.
The three boys, aged 12 and 13, were part of a group of six teenagers swimming in a rocky area between Arrabassada and Miracle beaches on June 19. A yellow warning flag was flying due to rough sea conditions when three of the teenagers became trapped in the water.
A large-scale rescue operation involving lifeguards, emergency medical services, firefighters, police, the Red Cross and maritime rescue teams was launched. One of the boys died at the scene, while the two others were hospitalized in critical condition before dying on Saturday and Sunday.
The tragedy prompted Tarragona authorities to declare three days of mourning. On Sunday, around 300 people, including Catalan regional president Salvador Illa and Tarragona mayor Rubén Viñuales, gathered for a minute of silence in memory of the victims.
According to Chahine, one of the victims was a Moroccan national, while the second was a Spanish citizen of Moroccan origin whose family requested that he be buried in Morocco. The consul added that the Moroccan teenager was covered by insurance that included repatriation costs, while the family of the second victim had raised the funds necessary to return his body to Morocco.
