The PJD has reacted to the verdicts handed down last Thursday, which sentenced two former PAM officials, Saïd Naciri and Abdenbi Bioui, to 10 and 12 years in prison respectively for their involvement in the so-called «Escobar of the Sahara» case.
In a statement, the Islamist party's general secretariat said that «the real culprit in this case is a party model built on strengthening dubious electoral machines, with no connection to politics and lacking the political and moral qualities required to represent citizens and manage public affairs».
The PJD said it was referring to the party «that entrusted these individuals with key positions within its structures and leadership and endorsed them under its banner». It urged «the party's national leadership to draw the necessary lessons and disavow this model of political practice». The statement also stressed the need to «clean up political life, strengthen the credibility of institutions, respect the will of voters and promote honest political and party work».
The party further called on all political parties to uphold «the integrity and fairness of the electoral process» and to fulfill their responsibility in «protecting the democratic process from individuals who corrupt elections and undermine citizens' trust in politics and political parties».
Last Thursday, the criminal chamber of the Casablanca Court of Appeal sentenced Naciri, the former president of Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) and a former PAM MP, to 10 years in prison. Bioui, the former president of the Oriental Regional Council and another former PAM official, received a 12-year sentence.
Relations between the PJD and the PAM have been marked by deep rivalry since the latter's creation in 2008. Since then, the two parties have repeatedly clashed over political and electoral issues.
