Increasing concern grips the Spanish Football Federation over alleged pressures from U.S. President Donald Trump on FIFA, purportedly to sway the decision in Morocco's favor to host the 2030 World Cup final.
The venue for the final of the joint World Cup, to be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, is yet to be decided. According to Spanish media, the Royal Spanish Football Federation is increasingly worried by «reliable» reports, hinting that external pressures may lead to the final being held in Morocco.
The sources claim U.S. President Donald Trump is a significant supporter of this move, allegedly exerting «very clear» pressure to have Morocco host the final, citing its status as a «partner» of the United States. Reports also suggest Trump harbors a «particular hostility toward Spain».
These concerns have sparked institutional actions in Spain, amid a rivalry between Madrid and Casablanca to host the World Cup's international press center, which will only be awarded to one city. Madrid City Council has reinforced its position, asserting: «We do not want to be the international press center unless the final is held in Madrid», a move perceived by Spanish media as an attempt to influence the organizers.
Meanwhile, the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, stated in a recent interview that the stadium choice for the final will be based on FIFA's objective criteria, which include capacity, infrastructure quality, surrounding facilities, and other approved technical and organizational requirements.
Stadium capacity is a focal point in the competition to host the final. Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium can accommodate approximately 83,000 spectators, whereas the Hassan II Grand Stadium will boast a capacity of 115,000, set to become the world's largest football-specific stadium upon completion.
