Spain’s lower house will vote on July 23 on a bill granting nationality to Sahrawis born before 1976, after Pedro Sánchez’s PSOE ended months of deadlock by backing the Sumar-led initiative. The proposal, however, excludes Polisario-issued documents as proof, a condition likely to fuel political controversy.
Contrary to the Polisario’s wishes, the Sumar ministers have not withdrawn from the Spanish government. They have voiced no opposition to last week’s reaffirmation of Spain’s support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara. However, the five ministers did not hesitate to express their disagreement with the head of government on a different issue.
