Amid Algeria’s cautious official silence over the fast-moving developments on the Western Sahara issue at the United Nations, authorities in Algiers have turned to media outlets close to them to voice their position. These outlets have launched sharp attacks on France and the United Arab Emirates, accusing both countries of exerting «intense pressure» within the Security Council to push through a resolution recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
In his latest report on the situation in Western Sahara, the UN Secretary-General addressed the construction of a road linking Amgala to Bir Oum Grine in Mauritania. Much to the Polisario’s dismay, the United Nations did not issue any condemnation of the project undertaken by Morocco.
France has decided to end a privilege previously granted to Algerian officials and diplomats, who will now be required to go through the standard visa process to enter French territory.
