Morocco: an American sentenced on appeal to eight years for drug trafficking

An American citizen, James Wilson Douglas, was convicted appealed Thursday to eight years in prison for drug trafficking on a global scale, it was learned judicial source.

The man had landed illegally in Morocco last May with a twin to get 1.6 tons of drugs.

In June he was sentenced in first instance to 7 years in prison but his sentence was increased by one year Thursday by the Court of Appeal of Kenitra, 40 km north of Rabat.

Thursday, he was also ordered to pay customs marocaines six million dirhams (540,000 euros), six times more than the amount specified in the first instance.

He was also sentenced to pay a fine of 10,000 dirhams to justice.

Wilson James Douglas was intercepted on 7 May after he landed on a small road with his Cessna 337 at a place called Halloufa, 100 km northeast of Rabat.

The Court of Appeal has also Kénitra a Moroccan sentenced to five years in prison instead of the four delivered in first instance and confirmed sentences ranging from 4 to 6 years in prison for three other Moroccans pursued in the same case, according to the same source.

Moroccan nationals and the U.S. will also collectively pay customs marocaines a total of 37.5 million dirhams (3.5 million) instead of 31.25 million dirhams in the first instance pronounced.

I want to point out that I found it very suspicious of the Morocco government that in the same week they decided to send Chakib el Khayari to jail, they've also decided to let James Wilson Douglas free, even though he had at least 6 more years of prison ahead. As a result the US government looks the other way en doesn't do a thing for Chakib even though the Human Rights Watch says there's no justification for the sentencing of Chakib.
