RABAT (Reuters) - Seven foreign tourists, most of them French, have been killed after a bus packed with tourists collided with a car in southern Morocco, authorities say.

Civil rescue officials said on Tuesday between five and seven dead were French, although two may be of British nationality.

A doctor at a hospital in the Taroudant province where the crash occurred said that 10 other tourists were seriously injured.

"Those injured in the crash are being airlifted to us," the doctor, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

The French tourists were travelling in a bus when it crashed into a four-wheel-drive car in the Taroudant province, 700 km (440 miles) south of the capital.

Road accidents in Morocco kill on average 11 people a day and are caused mainly by reckless driving and a poor roads.

The last chapter is the reality unfortunately. Driving is scaring, the road is a misery, many exploited lorry-drivers fall asleep on the road and many car drivers use their car as a weapon to exteriorize their frustration in their daily life.

God help us. Even in town centers, the road is plenty of holes, therefore the road is narrowed or you have to drive on the pavement sometimes...

What a misery!!!!!!!

Dear All,

For me, it is a reflection of the real Moroccan society, the behaviour of the people in their cars shows how low the level of education is.

As for the state of the roads, it is again a sign of the lack of consideration of the local authorities for the people, they do not care about the normal human being lives, because they give a priority to their private interests.

There is an urgent need that the mentalities change in our country and the only way is by educating the prople.

Compared to the roads of washington DC Downtown, there is no difference. Therefore the reponsibility is mainly on the drivers and not the roads !

It's often safer for the cars to drive on the pavements in town - the pedestrians all walk in the middle of the roads!! In fact, when travelling by car from the UK, we found we could no longer find a UK insurer willing to cover us!! On a positive note, however, we do find that the traffic police are trying to clamp down on the lunatics. There were far fewer motorists breaking the speed limits when we were there last month, and many many cars were being stopped for speeding, as well as for emittance tests for smoking cars, for which the police were using their newly acquired testing machines. On the subject of seat belts however, I estimate about one in 20 motorists uses theirs, even though it is supposed to be compulsory. They need more traffic cops to clamp down on dangerous driving as the problem is so widespread. The condition of the roads is irrelevant - a good driver takes account of that and drives accordingly. In 22 years of taking our car over there we have never had so much as a scratch on our vehicle. I would advise anyone holidaying in Morocco to make sure their travel insurance is high specification if they are likely to be using the roads at all!

Dear all,
Do not forget the way people get their driver licence in Morocco.
They pay cash bakhshish and they don´t understand that learning to drive correctly is not just safe for other people but also for themselfs.
Ciao
