The mayor of Oujda, Omar Hjira, as well as 7 other members of the city’s municipal council have tested positive for the new coronavirus.
According to the Arabic- language newspaper Kifach, 34 out of the 65 members of the council underwent coronavirus tests on Wednesday, after the infection of an employee working as an engineer in the town was confirmed.
On Thursday, the capital of the Oriental region recorded the highest number of daily infections since the start of the pandemic, with 306 positive cases.
Oujda city hall is not the only municipal council where cases of the coronavirus have been detected. In August, the president of the Ouarzazate municipal council, Abderrahman Drissi and his deputy Said Essadeq, tested positive for the virus.
In July, the mayor of Marrakech and several of his deputies tested positive for covid-19.
