10 million doses of China’s anti-Covid-19 vaccine, manufactured by Sinopharma, will be delivered to Morocco in December, after a series of clinical trials carried out in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Argentina and China.
According to an article by daily newspaper Al Ahdath Al Maghribiya on Tuesday, only 5 million Moroccans will benefit from the vaccine, as one person needs two injections in the span of 21 days.
The Arabic-language newspaper also recalls that the Ministry of Health had reached an agreement with the AstraZeneca laboratory for the acquisition of 17 million doses, with an optional purchase option of 3 million doses.
It announced that the government is currently discussing with other laboratories such as Pfizer and Casina Pio the possibility of acquiring a sufficient quantity to have the maximum number of Moroccans vaccinated.
This vaccination operation will first target staff in the health and national security sectors, before covering people aged over 65, patients with chronic diseases, pregnant women as well as civil servants and public transport staff.
«Although the vaccine is not compulsory, the Ministry of Health will however launch massive campaigns to raise awareness among people about the need to be vaccinated», the same source wrote.
On Monday at the House of Representatives, Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb announced that the vaccine will be available before 2021, adding that the kingdom is in the process of negotiating with several laboratories.
