A court in Almeria (southern Spain) decided on Friday to reopen the case related to the death of Moroccan Ilias Tahiri, who died after he was handled by several security guards, on July 1, 2019 in a center for minors in Spain.
According to AFP and El Pais, this court is to consider «manslaughter» or «recklessness», according to an order unveiled Friday.
Faced with appeals from Tahiri's family and the public prosecutor's office, the Almería Provincial Court has decided to revoke the decision of a court of first instance which had closed this case in November 2019, considering the death as «accidental».
The case dates back to July 1, 2019, when Ilias died at the age of 18 in the Tierras de Oria detention center, after he was handled by security guards.
A video was published by the newspaper El Pais, amid the global wave of protests against police brutality, mainly after the assassination of George Floyd, who died last May in the United States.
