Almost one year after the death of its ambassador Bashir Seghir, the Polisario Front appointed, last week, a new head of its representation in South Africa.

According to the Front's press agency, Mohamed Yaslem Bissat presented his «credentials to the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary».

Received by an official from the South African Foreign Ministry, the representative of the Polisario presented a «full summary of the latest developments on the situation in Western Sahara».

This appointment comes as South Africa, the Polisario Front's biggest ally in Africa, abstained during the vote on the extension of the MINURSO’s mandate.

In November 2019, the separatist movement announced the death of Bachir Seghir, its ambassador to South Africa. A few months later, the Front lost Mhamad Khaddad, who had held the post of coordinator with MINURSO for several years.
