Moroccans most likely to defend Palestinian cause in the region, survey finds

A survey conducted by a German think tank shows that Moroccans are more likely to defend the Palestinian cause than other countries in the region. While 63% of Moroccan respondents oppose the Abraham Accords, 70% of them have an unfavorable impression of Israel and see it as a threat to the region.

Moroccans are more likely to defend the Palestinian cause when compared to other countries from the region, a new poll revealed. The survey, conducted by German think tank Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, shows that 70% of Moroccan respondents have an unfavorable impression of Israel.

The trend is the highest among the surveyed countries, including Saudi Arabia 65%, Qatar 59%, Palestine 56%, Germany 49% and Bahrain 48%. The only countries that have a more favorable impression of Israel are, USA 53% and the United Arab Emirates 46%.

Respondents from the same countries were also asked about their opinions about the Israel-UAE-Bahrain Peace Agreement. Again, Morocco was the only country, after Palestine, on the list to strongly oppose the agreement signed at the White House and brokered by the United States.

Israel-UAE-Bahrain Peace Agreement

Data show that 63% of Moroccan respondents oppose the agreement, while 70% of Palestinian respondents said the same. While only 48% and 52% of Saudi and Qatari respondents, respectively, oppose said agreement, 69% and 46% of respondents from the UAE and Bahrain, respectively, support it.

By the same token, 47% of Moroccans surveyed said that Israel benefits more from the Accord. While only 20% others said that said agreement benefits the USA and 16% claim it would be the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Meanwhile, 90% of Moroccan respondents agree that there should be a Palestinian state. The trend is higher than that of Palestinians themselves, as only 84% of Palestinian respondents agreed. As for other countries that strongly agree that there should be a Palestinian state, the numbers remain high : 88% in Saudi Arabia, 85% in Qatar, 81% in the UAE and 72% in Bahrain.

To Moroccans, Israel is a threat to the region

On the other hand, 61% of Moroccan respondents disagree that Israel has the right to exist as the Nation State of the Jewish People. The same percentage of respondents in the UAE agree with that. Moreover, 56% of Moroccans respondents disagree that Israel has the right to exist, while 20% agree with the statement.

As for the USA’s role in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, 54% of Moroccan respondents said that they think moving the US embassy to Jerusalem diminishes peace and stability in the region. 37% others believe that Joe Biden will be more successful in the Middle East when it comes to stability and peace than President Donald Trump.

45% of Moroccans are favorable to Biden while 61% are unfavorable to Trump. 43% of the same respondents believe that Israel threatens regional stability, 13% think the USA are the threat while 10% say it is Iran.

The survey, which was co-conducted by Kevoon Global Research, reached 4,000 people in total polled in 9 countries, answering 30 questions.
