The Guerguerate crisis has given an opportunity to Pablo Iglesias, Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain since January 2020, to show support for the Polisario Front.

On his Twitter account, he wrote that the Security Council in its resolution, adopted on January 13, 1995, «reaffirms its commitment to organize, without further delay, a free referendum, fair and impartial for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara…».

Since he joined the government coalition in January, the head of Podemos has refrained from addressing issues related to Morocco. Moreover, in February, he did not hesitate to distance himself from a meeting held by members of his party and the current Secretary of State for Social Rights, Nacho Alvarez, with a delegation from the Polisario. «It is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that determines Spain's position on the Sahara», he once said.

A few weeks earlier and in response to a question on Morocco's decision to expand its maritime borders, he said he was convinced that the Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonsalez, «will be able to provide the most adequate and consistent answer».
