King Mohammed VI received a phone call from the Emir of Qatar Tamim Ben Hamad on Monday, according to a statement by the royal palace.

During this call, the Emir of Qatar «welcomed the decisions taken by HM the King to restore the situation in the region of Guerguerate in the Moroccan Sahara and commended the Sovereign for the positive results of these decisions which allowed to reopen the crossing for the safe movement of people and good».

«His Highness also expressed his support for the Kingdom of Morocco in the measures it took to defend the security of its territories and its citizens».

Following the military intervention carried out by the Moroccan army in Guerguerate, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said it was deeply concerned about the situation in the border crossing. Doha also commended the operation led by the Kingdom to secure the flow of goods and people in the region.

On the other hand, the call was an opportunity for the Moroccan King to «welcome the decision of HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani to hold direct elections of the members of the Shura Council, in the next year».

For the record, Morocco condemned the blockade imposed in June 2017 on Qatar by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Egypt.
