Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is expected to visit Morocco on Friday to meet Abdelouafi Laftit, his Moroccan counterpart.
According to El Espanol, during this visit the Spanish minister will address the migration crisis and the rising number of migrant arrivals in Spain.
Sources from the Spanish Interior Ministry told the newspaper that the department «has been working for over a year to prevent what is currently happening on the Atlantic route». However, the same sources insisted that relations between Spain and Morocco are very good.
«They understand that the increasing number of boats arriving in Spain is to be blamed on mafias who have found new routes and means to avoid controls», the same source added.
On Wednesday, the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres urged the Spanish government to transfer to other autonomous communities the thousands of migrants who arrived in the Canaries this year.
