AstraZeneca, a Swedish-British multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company, said Monday that its coronavirus vaccine was up to 90% effective, reports Associated Press. The vaccine, developed by Oxford University and manufactured by AstraZeneca, was ordered by Morocco.

AstraZeneca’s findings suggest, «a half-dose of the vaccine followed by a full dose at least one month later was 90% effective». «Another approach, giving patients two full doses one month apart, was 62% effective. The combined results showed an average efficacy rate of 70%», it added.

According to AP, said vaccine uses a weakened version of a common cold virus combined with genetic material for the characteristic spike protein of the virus that causes COVID-19.

The findings are based on trials conducted on 20,000 people, 131 of them have contracted the disease. Trials have been conducted in the United States, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Kenya and Latin America.

Last week, the head of government announced that Morocco has placed orders for two anti-Covid vaccines: the Chinese vaccine from Sinopharm as well as that from AstraZeneca. Saadeddine El Othmani indicated that Morocco is in negotiations with Pfizer. «We are looking to acquire doses from three to four companies», he said.
