Guerguerate : Algeria irritated by ICESCO’s support for Morocco

Algeria did not comment on the support provided by Arab countries and by the general secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the FAR operation in Guerguerate. On the other hand, Algiers chose to speak up against the Organization of the Islamic World for Education, Science and Culture for expressing the same position.

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), a specialized organization that operates under the aegis of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has irritated the Algerian authorities. The agency, which is headquartered in Rabat, issued a statement supporting the military operation led by the Royal Armed Forces on November 13 in Guerguerate.

ICESCO underlines «its understanding and gratitude for the measures taken by the authorities of the Kingdom of Morocco» to ensure the flow of goods and people in the border crossing.

«After having followed the developments of the situation in the Moroccan-Mauritanian border region», the organization said that it hopes «the stability of the situation, the construction of policies and the facilitation of human communication in the region would continue and become the most distinguished model of unity in the Islamic world».

This position was not really appreciated by the Algerian authorities, which ordered their ambassador to Morocco to meet the body’s director general, Saudi Arabia’s Mohamed Al Malik, to tell him that Algiers «disapproves of the organization's support for the Moroccan military attack in the Guerguerate area, in Western Sahara», Observalgérie reports.

Algiers observes silence over OIC’s support in Morocco

This is not the first time that ICESCO irritates Algerian officials on the Sahara issue. Indeed, the organization's participation in the 2015 edition of the Crans Montana Forum held in Dakhla had also led the Algerian ambassador to express his strong protests to the former director general of the body, Abdelaziz Touijer.

In addition to the support of ICESCO, it is worth mentioning that the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, based in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, which expressed its support «for the measures taken by the Kingdom of Morocco to guarantee the flow of goods and people in the buffer zone of Guerguerate in the Moroccan Sahara». The body also «condemned any movement threatening traffic in this region linking Morocco and Mauritania», reports the Saudi press agency. But this time, Algeria did not react to the position of the OIC.

Last week, Algerian media called for a response to the solidarity expressed by the monarchies of the Gulf States Cooperation Council with Morocco, even advocating Algeria's withdrawal from the Arab League.

Yesterday, the National Liberation Front organized a solidarity conference with the Polisario in which its representative in Algiers, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, took part.
