Since the signing on November 27 of a new four-year fisheries agreement between Morocco and Russia, the Polisario has observed an unusual silence. Neither the Front's leadership, nor its multiple media outlets have yet commented on the return of Russian ships to Morocco, including the Sahara waters.

After the agreement expired on March 16, 2020, the Polisario remained silent on the negotiations between Russian and Moroccan officials to authorize Russian ship-owners to fish again in Moroccan Atlantic waters.

This had never been the case for the European Union-Morocco fisheries agreement. The Front was mobilized in 2018 both at the European Parliament and at the Court of Justice of the European Union against said agreement.

For the record, Russia has always defended in the Security Council «the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people». A position reiterated, moreover on November 25, by its ambassador in Algiers, Igor Beliaev.

The first fisheries agreement between Morocco and Russia, which includes the Sahara waters, dates back to 1992.
