The former Tunisian president, Moncef Marzouki, slammed Algeria in one of his recent statements. Speaking directly to the inhabitants of the Tindouf camps, Marzouki described them as «hostages of a bad choice of the Algerian regime».

«They have no future within this Algerian context that speaks of a war of liberation against the Moroccan occupation, evoking a Sahrawi state», he said in an intervention presented during his participation in a conference on the situation of freedoms and democracy in Algeria.

«We must get out of this because it is false and mortgages their future. These Sahrawis are running behind a homeland that will never exist because it will lead to a fierce war in the region from which no one will escape».

«Saharawis have the possibility of having three homelands and not one, the first is autonomy within the Moroccan homeland, the second is the Moroccan homeland, and the third is the Maghreb Union», he argued.

He insisted that this space will provide the population of the Tindouf camps with protection «instead of being under pressure in a desert region in Algeria. They will have the right to settle in Tunisia or to work in Libya or Algeria and to contribute to the elections which will be held in the AMU countries, and therefore they will have an open nation».

«What is this illusion that the Algerian regime sold them ? This regime has committed a crime against its people, the Maghreb Union and the Saharawi people as well», Moncef Marzouki said.
