Morocco and Israel agreed, Thursday, to normalize diplomatic ties, according to US President Donald Trump. On his Twitter account, Trump wrote that «Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!».

The 45th President of the United States has also agreed to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. «Today, I signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara», he wrote, adding that «Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal is the only basis for a just and lasting solution for enduring peace and prosperity».

The agreement was sealed after a phone call that brought President Trump and King Mohammed VI together on Thursday.

Liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv

A statement by the Royal Cabinet announced the decision, adding that the United States will open a consulate in the city of Dakhla. The latter will mostly carry economic missions to encourage American investors and boost economic and social development in the region, for the favor of the inhabitants of the Southern provinces, the statement added.

The same statement announced that, on the other hand, Morocco will resume «official ties and diplomatic relations» with Israel. Liaison offices will also be reopened in Rabat and Tel Aviv, as was the case before 2002, the statement added.

King Mohammed VI has also given his instructions to grant overflights and also direct flights to and from Israel for all Israelis. The statement also added that Morocco will promote economic cooperation between Israeli and Moroccan companies.

In the same statement, the Sovereign reaffirmed Morocco’s «stable and balanced position on the Palestinian issue, stressing that Morocco supports a solution based on two states living side by side in peace and security, and that negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli parties remain the only way to reach a final, lasting and comprehensive solution to this conflict».
