The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Washington's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara is a «breach of international law».

Quoted by Sputnik News, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov reminded media in his country that «there are relevant decisions and an international mission to hold a referendum in Western Sahara».

«It is a unilateral decision that goes beyond international law and the UN Security Council resolutions that the Americans themselves voted for».

The Russian media also recalled that the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, declared Thursday that «the position of the United Nations on Western Sahara has not changed and a solution to the issue can only be found on the basis of UN resolutions».

For the record, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad also condemned, Thursday, the American decision to recognize the sovereignty of Morocco over the Sahara. Egypt and Gulf countries, however, welcomed this initiative.
