Head of Government Saadeddine El Othmani welcomed the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. It is «a historic victory and a consecration of the efforts of HM King Mohammed VI in the defense of the national cause», the secretary general of the Justice and Development party told MAP.
President Donald Trump's decision «constitutes an important turning point insofar as it is the first time that a Western country has so explicitly recognized the Moroccan character of the Sahara», he said.
He also noted that the United States is not only a superpower, but also a permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations and that the American administration has decided to accompany this presidential decree with a practical measure through the opening of an American consulate in Dakhla.
«Today it is a country from another continent that is the American continent (…) This will open the way for other countries to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and, possibly, to open consulates in the southern provinces».
He also recalled that «the country which usually prepares Security Council resolutions has today made a historic decision by recognizing the Moroccan character of the Sahara, which constitutes the prelude to other victories for the national cause».
El Othmani praised the phone call King Mohammed VI had with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday.
