The Russian Foreign Ministry estimated on Saturday that the American position on the Sahara issue could «provoke further violence in the region». According to Russian News Agency TASS, Russia believes that «the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara may hamper the United Nations’ efforts to resolve the conflict». Moscow speaks of «a new unilateral initiative which threatens stability in the region».

«With this decision, the administration of Donald Trump proceeded to the destruction of the internationally recognized legal basis for the settlement of the Sahara conflict, which requires determining the final status of this region through a referendum».

The American decision may «worsen relations between the parties and trigger a new cycle of violence in the Sahara and Sahel region».

«Moscow's position on the Sahara issue is that its permanent and just solution is only possible through the implementation of United Nations resolutions within the framework of measures compatible with the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations».

Russian Foreign Ministry

The ministry indicated that reaching this objective «goes through the resumption of direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front, under the auspices of the United Nations».

On Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov called the American decision «a breach of international law».
