American diplomat Christopher Ross, who served before as the UN envoy to Western Sahara, commented on Monday on the United States' recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara.
Speaking to Radio Algerie, the former UN envoy estimated that «the sovereignty of Western Sahara does not belong to US President Donald Trump or to Morocco». He thus qualified this recognition as «a dangerous decision which would negatively affect the stability of the region and the interests of the United States in North Africa».

Christopher Ross, who resigned from his post in 2017, believes that Trump's decision «will not change the international approach to the Western Sahara issue and will not eliminate the urgent need to implement the resolutions of the Security Council». It is «rather an obstacle to a solution and threatens security and peace in the region, which is currently experiencing an atmosphere of growing tension», he added.
For the American, «the decision will have a negative impact on American-Algerian bilateral relations». Ross also clarified that «the new US administration led by Joe Biden is required to reverse Trump's decision if it wants to preserve its interests in North Africa» because US interests in this area «require a careful and balanced approach».
