The chairman of the Western Sahara Intergroup at the European Parliament has resigned. The German politician, political scientist and since July 2014he is Member of the European Parliament representing Germany as part of the Party of European Socialists, Joachim Schuster announced his resignation in a letter on Tuesday.
«The aim was to encourage the EU, to develop – hand in hand with the African Union – a more active and constructive approach towards the conflict», he regretted.
«The conditions for these aims have changed dramatically with the end of the ceasefire. Although there have been several breaches of the ceasefire agreement by Morocco throughout the years, I consider the decision of the Frente Polisario to terminate the ceasefire to be a serious strategic error».
«I do not see how this can promote a solution to the conflict», he asked. On the other hand, he said that he feared that this will «be significantly exasperated». «I do not think this serves the Sahrawi people», he said.
For the record, the Polisario announced on February 14, 2020 the creation of the friendship group «Peace for the Saharawi people» within the European Parliament.
