Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita will inaugurate, on Friday December 18, the African Migration Observatory. The Commissioner for Social Affairs of the African Union Commission Amira El Fadil will attend the ceremony.
This project was proposed by King Mohammed VI and submitted during the 30th Summit of the African Union (AU). A second proposal was also submitted to create the post of an African Union Special Envoy in charge of migration, MAP recalled.
This observatory will have the mission of «understanding, anticipating and acting». It is responsible for developing the exchange of information between the countries of the continent, for a more controlled management of migratory flows, a diplomatic source told Yabiladi.
The Observatory will support other African countries in building skills to develop national migration policies. It is also a practical response to cover the lack of data on migration in Africa.
The Observatory should also share this data via an interconnected system, bringing together different African sub-regions, to inform policy makers and improve the capacities of AU countries.
