The United Nations Security Council will discuss Western Sahara, Monday, after President Donald Trump recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory, diplomats told Reuters.

The closed-door UN Security Council meeting on the American decision was requested by Germany, the same source added.

The step comes after the US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft sent a copy of Trump’s proclamation recognizing that the «entire Western Sahara territory is part of the Kingdom of Morocco» to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday.

Days after the Trump Administration decision, Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarriuc said that the UN Secretary-General’s «positions remain unchanged» when it comes to the territorial dispute.

«He remains convinced that a solution to the question of Western Sahara is possible, in accordance» UN Security Council resolutions, Dujarric said.

It is worth mentioning that Trump’s recognition comes in exchange of the reestablishment of diplomatic ties between Rabat and Tel Aviv.
