On Tuesday, head of government Saadeddine El Othmani attended the royal audience granted to the US-Israeli delegation and signed the joint declaration that brought together Morocco, the United States and Israel. El Othmani’s attendance, however, stirred controversy within the Justice and Development Party (PJD).
The party he heads had built a large part of its legitimacy on supporting the Palestinian cause and the rejection of normalization with Israel. The party had even insisted on supporting the Palestinian people during its electoral program for the 2016 elections.
While some pro-Palestine activists within the political formation denounced the step, the party is preparing, according to well-informed sources, to organize its national council. Speaking to Yabiladi on Wednesday, parliamentary adviser Abdelali Hamieddine confirmed the information.
«The party, which is experiencing widespread discontent, will hold a meeting today, to set a date for holding an extraordinary congress of the National Council to discuss this issue».
For his part, Abdelaziz Aftati, member of the party’s secretariat, recognized the existence of a «situation» which «we have to face together as Moroccans». «It's a big program and it shouldn't turn into internal confrontations», he said.
For Aftati, we must «face the Zionist project under these constraints»
«We must contribute as Moroccans to the defense of the Sahara, because it is a legitimate question, and at the same time we must face the Zionist project», he added, qualifying the current situation as «difficult» and expressing his hope that «Moroccans will provide the necessary approach to stay on the line».
Regarding the signing by Saadeddine El Othmani of the Joint Declaration with the United States and Israel, Abdelaziz Aftati believes that «it would be cowardly to concentrate on a single institution».
«This is the position of a state and now it is not the time to pay attention to this issue. What is needed now is to face the Zionist project under these constraints.Conflicts, minor contradictions and internal contradictions are today a red line, because we must not go into them and forget the main contradiction represented by the Zionist project».
For the former elected official, «the PJD, in addition to unions, media and organizations, embody the consistent position of Moroccans, and this position was not invented». «Moroccans cannot recognize things that have nothing to do with legitimacy. The will of people who love legitimacy and fight for legitimacy cannot fail», he continued.
Abdelaziz Aftati also insists on «the conviction that cannot fail» and that «the occupation will end». «There is a kind of confusion but this conviction is certain», he concluded.
It is worth mentioning that the website of the Justice and Development Party ignored the declaration of the signing of a Joint Declaration between Morocco, the United States and Israel.
