Chinese agency for regulating drugs and medical devices has officially accepted the request of the country’s leading vaccine maker, Sinopharm, to take one of its Covid-19 vaccine to the market.

«The Center for Drug Evaluation of China’s National Medical Products Administration has formally accepted the application and started examination procedure», the Global Times newspaper said, adding that a conditional approval could be granted as early as January 1.

The company said that it has collected data from countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, where clinical trials have taken place on its vaccine candidate. Sinopharm submitted its candidacy on November 25.

Earlier this month, the United Arab Emirates officially approved Sinopharm's investigational vaccine, claiming it was 86% effective. At least 15 vaccine candidates are being tracked in China, five of them being in the final stages, Anadolu recalls.

Sinopharm vaccines, developed by the Peking University and the Wuhan University, use an inactivated virus and require two doses to produce antibodies against the new disease.

For the record, Morocco announced on Thursday that it has acquired 65 million doses of the two vaccines the Kingdom has opted for.
