With great precision, Abderrahmane Bouihlougat, 31, from Agadir, draws beautiful geometric shapes on the sand of the beaches, using an iron shovel and with a little help from his friends.
In an interview with Yabiladi, he said that he dropped out of middle school to work as a gardener. A job that inspired drawings on sand.
«I work as a gardener, and the person I worked for turned the gardens into paintings. So I thought about doing something similar, but not on grass. This curiosity made me search the Internet until I came across artists who draw on the sand of beaches».
The young man said that he «liked the idea», especially as being himself a beach lover. «I started to think of drawing a big picture on the beach of Imsouane and I drew the initial shape at home before going with my friends to the beach. I ended up turning the idea into reality», he recalls.
Abderrahmane ended up trying, since then, to draw other shapes, without succeeding. Self-taught, he decided to look deeper into it and broaden his knowledge of the art, thanks to the Internet. «Drawing on sand requires precise knowledge of the tide timing, because if you don't know enough about it, the tide can ruin everything you do on the sand. Therefore, I can only draw in the morning or in the evening», explained the young artist.
A talent, an art and several challenges
He told Yabiladi that he «prepares well» at home before executing his plans, for ephemeral paintings that can only last for a short period. «Once at the beach, there is no room for mistakes. If you make a mistake, it cannot be fixed and you have to wait until the next day», he said.
«When I finish drawing, I feel that I have achieved what I dream of in life, and when the tide rises and erases what I have drawn, my consolation remains that the sea will leave me a wonderful place to draw on the next day».
And the ambitions of the young man also grow with the sizes of his paintings. Indeed, Abderrahmane Bouihlougat plans to switch to 3D. «I want to draw a big picture. I know it is very difficult, but it is not impossible», he said.
Always on the lookout for new knowledge, he nevertheless experienced certain difficulties. The youngster has, in fact, received invitations to participate in festivals in France, without being able to get there. «I couldn't go there because I couldn't get a visa, as I didn't have an artist's card», he regretted.
In 2020, he received an invitation to participate in another festival in France, which was to be organized in April, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus, and so were the activities of the festivals of Saïdia and Agadir that he was invited to.
Abderrahmane Bouihlougat expressed the hope that his talent would allow him to obtain the necessary material and moral support and that he would find someone to support him in order to develop his capacities and pursue his creativity and participate in international exhibitions and competitions related to this art.
