Montreal public security vice-president, Abdelhaq Sari, admitted on Monday that he is in Morocco, after being approached by TVA Nouvelles following several emails received to announce his presence in the Kingdom.

The elected official explained, in an email sent to the same source, that his presence in Morocco was «in no way» a stay devoted to leisure, reports Journal de Montreal.

The city councilor of the district of Marie-Clarac flew to Morocco to assist his mother, a septuagenarian, who is losing autonomy.

«I had to leave the country for an essential trip to Morocco, in order to go to my mother, aged 79, who is widowed and has not been independent for several months, to help her move to a residence more suited to her needs», he explained.

«It was not a vacation, my wife and my son stayed in Montreal. I had no choice but to go and help her move, I was the best placed person in my family to take care of her and help her move», Abdelhaq Sari argued.

The latter said he had to accompany his mother for treatment at the hospital during her stay, but that she now lives in a place where she is safe. «Obviously, I will follow the government quarantine rules to the letter when I return this week», he promised.

Several voices have been raised to criticize Abdelhaq Sari's trip, while the government of Quebec has imposed a lockdown from December 25 to January 10, to fight against the spread of the coronavirus. Canada is also imposing a Covid-19 screening test and a mandatory 14-day quarantine or isolation for travelers to the country.
